Conditional guide

Spanish conditional tense

Use the Spanish conditional for hypothetical results, polite requests, and future-in-the-past statements.

Core uses

The conditional often translates would plus a verb. It expresses hypothetical results, softens requests, and reports a future action from a past viewpoint.

  • Viajaría más si tuviera tiempo.I would travel more if I had time.
  • ¿Podrías ayudarme?Could you help me?

How it is formed

Add -ía, -ías, -ía, -íamos, and -ían to the infinitive. The conditional uses the same irregular stems as the simple future.
