Verb comparison

Ser vs. estar: choose the right Spanish “to be”

Understand ser and estar through meaning, not the unreliable permanent-versus-temporary shortcut.

The useful distinction

Ser classifies or identifies; estar locates or presents a state. The distinction is semantic, so either verb can describe something long-lasting or brief.

  • Ana es lista.Ana is clever.
  • Ana está lista.Ana is ready.

Location has one important exception

Use estar for the location of people and things. Use ser to state where an event takes place: El concierto es en el parque.
