Present tense guide

Spanish present tense conjugation

Build the Spanish present tense with regular endings, stem changes, irregular yo forms, and practical examples.

What the present tense covers

The Spanish present expresses habits, current facts, and actions happening now. Unlike English, it can translate both “I speak” and “I am speaking” when the context is clear.

  • Trabajo desde casa.I work from home.
  • Ahora escribo un mensaje.I am writing a message now.

Regular patterns

Remove -ar, -er, or -ir from the infinitive and add the matching person ending. The nosotros form often preserves the infinitive stem even when other forms have a stem change.

High-value irregular patterns

Learn common irregular yo forms such as tengo, hago, pongo, and conozco, along with stem changes such as e→ie, o→ue, and e→i. Studying pattern families is faster than memorizing each verb in isolation.
